Two EMT/Fire Training seniors brought home a title in the Emergency Medical Technician team event from the SkillsUSA national competition in Atlanta, Georgia. SkillsUSA gives students the opportunity to showcase their skills and abilities in specific career-technical training areas. This year, thousands of students from across the US competed in over 100 different events.
During the EMT team challenge, Tyler Kebbel (right), Brooklyn High School, and David Medina (left), Fairview High School, were evaluated on their ability to perform as Emergency Medical Technicians under the auspices of the National Registry Patient Assessment Technical Scope of Practice Standards (TSOPS), the most current American Heart Association CPR/ECC guidelines, and the AAOS Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured. This three-round event consisted of two written exams and a demonstration round, which accounted for half the total score. In this all-important hands-on segment of the competition, the students had to perform different scenarios including bleeding and hemorrhage control, medication administration, epi-pen allergic reaction, and patient assessment. The students performed under pressure and placed first in a highly competitive field.
Both graduates will capitalize on their Polaris experience and continue to work in the public safety field. Tyler plans to attend paramedic school this fall. David has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and will start boot camp in July with plans to work in para-rescue.
This is a fantastic accomplishment! Congratulations and good luck!
